A Taste of Spain in Baltimore

Tapas Teatro Offer Small Plates and Big Pleasures

Despite being hundreds of miles away from the sea, the capital of Spain is famous for its great selection of seafood.  Tapas Teatro, although thousands of miles away from Madrid, still provides authentic Spanish cuisine in the heart of Baltimore.

Located right next to the Charles Theater, this Spanish café offers a different experience when compared to other Spanish restaurants in the city.  Rather than focusing on entrees and large plates, this restaurant features a menu entirely of tapas.  Tapas are a wide variety of appetizers in Spanish cuisine.  They can be as simple as fried squid or as elaborate as a small plate of paella.

The bar offers a wide choice for different palates, including vegans!  You can enjoy a plate of Spain’s famous cured ham “Jamon Iberico.”  If you’re in the mood for seafood, you can order a typical plate of baby octopus and patatas or grilled calamari.  Vegetarians might enjoy some green pea or potato “croquetas,” a small bread crumbed fried food roll.  Though hopefully you will not limit yourself to just one food group!

It is fun to combine many different dishes into a full meal.  In Spain, it is common that no one orders a plate just for himself or herself.  Instead people prefer to order a large variety of plates and share between all.  This way of enjoying food allows you to try out a great variety of dishes on the menu.  Despite boasting a wide selection, in the few times I’ve been to Tapas Teatro it seems I’ve already tried nearly everything available on the menu!

Yet you have to be cautious. It is very tempting to order just one more tapa to share among your friends. Then this leads to another, and then another, and soon you find yourself ordering another plate of tortilla de patatas.  With dishes averaging around seven or eight dollars, the cost accumulates very fast on your bill.

That said the price definitely beats that of a plane ticket!
